Lyrics

Proud (To Be Dysfunctional)
Performed by: Kem Anderson & Sun Dogs

I am proud to be dysfunctional
Why should I not be?
I’ve been kicked around by this thing called life,
Since before the age of three
I’ve got an issue with my issues
I think I’ll be OK
So I’m standing tall;
Warts and all, upon my feet of clay

My father was manic-depressive,
He would not take his pills
He could beat those “crazy doctors”
In a test of wills
He never was a pious man
I can hear him to this day:
Yelling, “Get up damn it, we’re going to church;
Your mother wants to pray”

That’s why I’m proud to be dysfunctional
I hope that you are too
This world is such a messy place
I get hopeless and confused
I’m dealing with my imperfections;
I hate to hear the news:
Jesus was the last perfect man;
I guess the rest of us are screwed

I’m living in a Prozac-Nation;
Full of anger, guilt and shame
At least I know when I screw up,
There is someone else to blame
My parents and “the system" made me what I am
I blame Woodstock, Nixon, the Missile-Crisis,
And the War in Vietnam

I am proud to be dysfunctional
Why should I not be?
I’ve been kicked around by this thing called life,
Since before the age of three
I’ve got an issue with my issues;
But I think I’ll be OK
So I’m standing tall;
Warts and all, upon my feet of clay.

Enlightenment will light up your life,
If you can learn to love the real you
That’s why I’m proud to be dysfunctional
I hope that you are too
